Keeping Little Ones Cool This Summer
Essential tips to protect your baby from rising summer temperatures
With temperatures soaring across India, protecting our little ones from heat becomes crucial. Babies and toddlers are more vulnerable to heat-related issues as their bodies can't regulate temperature as effectively as adults.
Start with clothing - choose loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothes that allow air circulation. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat. For babies under 6 months, offer frequent breastfeeding sessions as breast milk provides perfect hydration. For older children, give small sips of water throughout the day.
Keep your home cool by using curtains during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM) and running fans or AC if available. During outings, use a lightweight stroller cover and avoid direct sun exposure. Watch for signs of overheating like excessive fussiness, dry mouth, or reduced urination.
Traditional remedies work well too - a gentle massage with coconut oil can keep skin moisturized, and light dal-chawal meals are easier to digest in hot weather. Remember, prevention is key - if your child seems unusually cranky or lethargic, move to a cooler space immediately and offer fluids.
