Keeping Baby's Bottom Happy This Monsoon
High humidity makes diaper rash worse—here's how to protect delicate skin
The monsoon's high humidity creates the perfect storm for diaper rash. When diapers don't dry properly and moisture gets trapped against your baby's skin, redness and irritation follow quickly.
The key is keeping your little one's bottom as dry as possible. Change diapers every 2-3 hours, or immediately after a bowel movement. After cleaning, pat the area completely dry—don't rush this step! Let your baby go diaper-free for 15-20 minutes twice daily if possible. This 'airing time' works wonders.
Use a thick barrier cream with zinc oxide at every change, not just when you see redness. Apply it generously—think 'frosting a cake', not just a thin layer. Avoid wipes with alcohol or fragrance; instead, use warm water with soft cotton cloth when at home.
Watch what you're eating if you're breastfeeding—very spicy or acidic foods can sometimes make baby's stools more irritating. For older babies on solids, ensure they're well-hydrated and avoid too many citrus fruits during active rash periods.
If the rash looks bright red, has raised bumps, or doesn't improve in 2-3 days despite good care, consult your pediatrician. It might be a fungal infection, which is common in humid weather and needs specific treatment. Remember, prevention is always easier than cure!
