Keeping Baby Clothes Fresh This Monsoon
Smart laundry tips to prevent rashes and infections from damp baby clothes
During monsoon, drying baby clothes becomes a real challenge. Damp clothes can harbor bacteria and fungi, leading to skin rashes, allergies, and that musty smell that just won't go away. For little ones with sensitive skin, this is especially concerning.
Here's what works: Always sun-dry clothes whenever possible, even if it's just weak sunlight filtering through clouds. Indoor drying? Use a fan or invest in a small room heater to speed up the process. Iron all clothes, especially undergarments and cloth nappies—the heat kills germs effectively. Add a few drops of Dettol or tea tree oil to the final rinse water for extra protection.
Avoid keeping wet clothes in the washing machine or bucket for too long—wash and hang immediately. Store dried clothes only when they're completely moisture-free. That slight dampness you might ignore can turn into a breeding ground for fungi overnight. Use breathable cotton wardrobes or add silica gel packets to absorb excess moisture.
If clothes smell musty despite washing, rewash them with a cup of white vinegar added to the cycle. For babies under 6 months, consider keeping a small stock of extra clothes so you're never rushing to use semi-dry ones. Your baby's comfort and health are worth these extra steps!
