Keep Your Toddler Cool & Hydrated This Summer
Essential summer hydration tips to protect your little one from heat
As summer temperatures soar across India, keeping your toddler properly hydrated becomes crucial for their health and comfort. Young children are more susceptible to dehydration as their bodies have a higher water content and they lose fluids faster than adults.
Offer water frequently throughout the day, even if your child doesn't ask for it. For toddlers over 12 months, fresh coconut water, diluted buttermilk (chaas), and homemade fruit juices work wonderfully. Traditional drinks like aam panna made from raw mangoes are excellent for preventing heat exhaustion.
Watch for early signs of dehydration: fewer wet diapers, dark yellow urine, dry mouth, or unusual fussiness. During outdoor play, take frequent shade breaks and offer sips of water every 15-20 minutes.
Avoid sugary drinks and limit dairy during very hot weather as they can be harder to digest. Instead, offer water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and curd. Dress your child in light, breathable cotton clothes and plan outdoor activities during cooler morning or evening hours.
Remember, prevention is always better than treatment. A well-hydrated child is a happy, healthy child ready to enjoy the summer safely.
