Keep Your Toddler Cool & Hydrated!
Best summer drinks for little ones — safe, natural & Indian kitchen-friendly.
Indian summers can be brutal, and young children — especially those under 5 — dehydrate much faster than adults. Their small bodies lose water quickly through sweat, and they often don't ask for water until they're already thirsty. As parents, we need to stay one step ahead!
The best hydration for babies under 6 months is breast milk alone — no water or juice needed. For babies 6 months and older, small sips of plain boiled and cooled water between feeds are perfectly fine. Avoid packaged juices, fizzy drinks, or flavoured milk powders — these do more harm than good.
For toddlers (1–5 years), try these wonderful Indian kitchen remedies: coconut water (nariyal paani) is a natural electrolyte drink, diluted chaas (buttermilk) with a pinch of jeera powder aids digestion and cools the body, aam panna made from raw mango with minimal sugar is a classic heat-stroke preventer, and plain rice kanji or daliya water is gentle and hydrating. Offer small sips every 30–45 minutes rather than waiting for your child to complain of thirst.
Watch out for signs of dehydration: dry lips, sunken eyes, less than 4 wet diapers a day, dark yellow urine, or unusual crankiness. If you notice these, increase fluids and consult your paediatrician promptly. This summer, keep it simple, keep it natural, and keep that little one hydrated and happy! 💛
