Keep Your Little One Safe from Food Poisoning

Monsoon brings joy, but also food safety risks. Here's how to protect your child.

The monsoon season creates the perfect conditions for bacteria and mold to thrive, making food poisoning more common in young children. Their developing immune systems are particularly vulnerable, so extra care is essential.

Start with fresh ingredients only. During monsoons, avoid buying pre-cut fruits and vegetables from street vendors. Wash all produce thoroughly under running water, even if you plan to peel them. For babies on purees, cook vegetables within 2-3 hours of purchasing. Store cooked food in the refrigerator immediately and reheat thoroughly before serving.

Avoid certain high-risk foods during these months. Skip leafy greens like palak and methi which trap moisture and bacteria. Be cautious with seafood and choose only trusted sources. For toddlers, avoid roadside chaats, cut fruits, and unpasteurized dairy. Stick to home-cooked khichdi, dal-rice, and fresh rotis.

Practice strict kitchen hygiene. Sterilize bottles and utensils daily. Wash your hands before preparing food and feeding your child. Keep raw and cooked foods separate. If your child shows signs of food poisoning like vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, offer plenty of fluids like ORS, coconut water, or diluted buttermilk, and consult your pediatrician immediately. Prevention is always easier than cure!
