Keep Your Little One Hydrated This Summer!
Simple tricks to ensure your baby drinks enough fluids in the heat.
May in India can be brutally hot, and young children — especially those under 5 — are far more vulnerable to dehydration than adults. Their tiny bodies lose water quickly through sweat, and they often don't know how to express thirst. As a parent, it's your superpower to stay one step ahead!
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula is all the hydration they need — do not give water separately. For babies 6 months and older, you can offer small sips of clean, boiled and cooled water between feeds. Toddlers (1–5 years) should drink 4–6 cups of fluids daily. Don't wait for them to cry with thirst — offer fluids proactively every 30–45 minutes.
Beyond plain water, try these Indian summer favorites: diluted coconut water (nariyal pani), thin buttermilk (chaas) with a pinch of salt, aam panna (small amounts for kids above 1 year), or homemade fruit juices without added sugar. Cucumber, watermelon, and muskmelon have high water content and make great snacks.
Watch for warning signs of dehydration: dry lips, fewer wet diapers, sunken eyes, unusual fussiness, or dark yellow urine. If you notice these, consult your pediatrician promptly.
Dos: Offer fluids regularly, dress children in light cotton, keep them indoors during peak heat (11am–4pm). Don'ts: Avoid cold drinks straight from the fridge, sugary sodas, or packaged juices. You've got this, parents — small habits make a big difference! 💙
