Keep Your Little One Hydrated This Summer
Essential tips to prevent dehydration in babies and toddlers during hot weather
As temperatures soar across India, keeping your little one properly hydrated becomes crucial. Young children lose water faster than adults and may not always express thirst clearly.
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula provides all the hydration they need - avoid giving plain water. For older babies and toddlers, offer small sips of water throughout the day. Make it fun with colorful cups or add a slice of cucumber for flavor.
Include water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, coconut water, and diluted fresh lime water (nimbu paani). Traditional drinks like buttermilk (chaas) and tender coconut water are excellent choices. Avoid sugary drinks and packaged juices which can worsen dehydration.
Watch for warning signs: dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, lethargy, or irritability. During outdoor play, take frequent water breaks and seek shade. Dress them in light, breathable cotton clothes.
Remember, prevention is better than cure. Small, frequent sips work better than forcing large amounts at once.
