Keep Your Little One Cool This Summer!
Smart hydration tips for babies & toddlers in Indian summer heat.
April is one of the hottest months across India, and little bodies heat up much faster than ours. Babies and toddlers under 5 are especially vulnerable to dehydration and heat exhaustion — and the tricky part is they often cannot tell you they are thirsty. As a parent, you need to stay one step ahead.
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula is all they need — do not give water separately, as it can upset their tiny tummies. For babies over 6 months and toddlers, offer small sips of water frequently throughout the day, even if they do not ask. Aim for 4–6 cups of fluid daily for toddlers aged 1–3 years.
Indian summers offer wonderful natural hydrators — use them! Coconut water (nariyal paani) is gentle and excellent for children over 1 year. Diluted homemade aam panna (raw mango drink, low sugar) helps replenish electrolytes. Thin buttermilk (chaas) with a pinch of jeera is cooling and gut-friendly. Fresh fruit like watermelon, muskmelon, and cucumber are 90% water — offer these as snacks.
Avoid packaged juices, sodas, and sugary drinks — they worsen dehydration. Watch for warning signs: dry lips, sunken eyes, no tears when crying, very dark yellow urine, or unusual lethargy. These are signs your child needs fluids urgently and possibly a doctor's visit.
Dress children in loose, light-coloured cotton clothes, avoid outdoor play between 11am–4pm, and always keep a water bottle handy. A well-hydrated child sleeps better, eats better, and stays happier through the summer!
