Keep Your Little One Cool This May!

Simple hydration tips to protect your baby from summer heat.

May in India can be brutal — temperatures soar above 40°C in many states, and little bodies are far more vulnerable to dehydration and heat exhaustion than adults. Young children lose water quickly through sweat, breathing, and play, and they often cannot tell you when they are thirsty. As a parent, you need to stay one step ahead.

For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula is all they need — do not give water separately, as it can disturb their tiny tummy. For babies 6 months and older, offer small sips of cool (not cold) water frequently throughout the day, especially after outdoor time. Older toddlers can also enjoy coconut water, diluted lassi, aam panna (without too much sugar), or homemade fruit juices like watermelon and cucumber — all wonderful Indian summer staples that hydrate and nourish at the same time.

Watch for these warning signs of dehydration: fewer wet diapers than usual, dry lips, sunken eyes, unusual fussiness, or dark yellow urine in older toddlers. These mean your child needs fluids immediately and possibly a doctor's visit.

Practical tips: Dress your child in loose, light-coloured cotton clothes. Avoid outdoor play between 11 AM and 4 PM. Use a wet cloth on the back of the neck to cool them down quickly. Keep the home well-ventilated. Offer fluids every 30–45 minutes even if they do not ask.

Remember, a well-hydrated child is a happy, active child. This summer, make hydration a fun routine — let your toddler pick their favourite cup or straw to make drinking water exciting!
