Keep Your Little One Cool This May!
Simple hydration tips to protect your child from summer heat.
May in India can be brutal — temperatures soaring above 40°C in many cities. Young children, especially under 5, lose body fluids much faster than adults and cannot always tell you they are thirsty. As a parent, you need to stay one step ahead.
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula is enough — no extra water needed. But for babies 6 months and older, offer small sips of cool (not cold) boiled water frequently throughout the day, especially after outdoor time or play.
For toddlers and children up to 5 years, try natural hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, coconut water, buttermilk (chaas), and diluted lassi — all wonderful Indian summer staples. Avoid packaged juices and sugary drinks as they do not hydrate well and add unnecessary sugar.
Watch for early signs of dehydration: dry lips, less urine (fewer wet diapers), irritability, or sunken eyes. If your child has not urinated in 6–8 hours or seems unusually lethargic, contact your pediatrician immediately.
Dress children in loose, light-colored cotton clothes. Avoid going outdoors between 11am and 4pm. Use a mild, child-safe sunscreen if you must step out. A well-hydrated, cool child is a happy child — and a less stressed parent too!
