Keep Your Little One Cool & Hydrated This Summer
Essential hydration tips for babies and toddlers during Indian summers
With summer temperatures soaring across India, keeping your little ones properly hydrated is more crucial than ever. Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable to dehydration as they lose water faster through their skin and have smaller body reserves.
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula provides all the hydration they need - avoid giving plain water. For older babies and toddlers, offer frequent sips of water throughout the day. Don't wait for them to ask - young children often don't recognize thirst.
Include hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, buttermilk (chaas), tender coconut water, and diluted fresh fruit juices. Avoid sugary drinks and limit caffeine-containing items. Watch for signs of dehydration: fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, lethargy, or irritability.
Keep your home cool, dress children in light cotton clothes, and plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening. During peak summer hours (11 AM - 4 PM), stay indoors. A well-hydrated child is a happy, healthy child ready to explore and play!
