Keep Your Little One Cool & Hydrated This Summer
Essential summer hydration tips for toddlers during India's peak heat season
As temperatures soar across India this April, keeping your toddler properly hydrated becomes crucial. Young children lose water faster than adults and may not always express thirst clearly.
Offer water frequently throughout the day, even if your child doesn't ask. For 1-3 year olds, aim for 4-6 glasses daily. Make it fun with colorful sippy cups or add a splash of fresh lemon. Coconut water is excellent for natural electrolyte replacement.
Include water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, buttermilk (chaas), and fresh fruit juices. Avoid giving too much juice though - dilute it with water. Traditional drinks like jaljeera or aam panna (without excess sugar) are perfect cooling options.
Watch for dehydration signs: dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, lethargy, or crying without tears. During outdoor play, take water breaks every 15-20 minutes. Dress your child in light, breathable cotton clothes.
Avoid peak sun hours (11 AM - 4 PM) when possible. If your toddler refuses water, try popsicles made from fresh fruit juice or offer small sips frequently rather than large amounts at once.
