Keep Baby's Scalp Cool This Summer!
Sweaty scalps cause cradle cap & rashes — here's what to do.
In the scorching May heat, babies and toddlers sweat heavily — and a lot of that sweat collects on their scalp. This can lead to itching, cradle cap flare-ups, fungal rashes, and even tiny heat bumps on the head. It's more common than most parents realise, and very easy to manage with a few simple steps.
First, keep your child's hair short and clean during summer. For babies under 1 year, gently wash the scalp with a mild, tear-free baby shampoo 3–4 times a week. Do not over-wash — it strips natural oils. For toddlers with longer hair, light oiling (just a few drops of coconut or almond oil) is enough. Avoid heavy oiling or leaving oil on overnight, as it traps heat and worsens sweat rashes.
After bath time, make sure the scalp dries completely before putting on a cap or hat. Damp scalps under tight caps are a perfect breeding ground for fungal infections. If your child must wear a hat outdoors, choose loose cotton ones only.
Watch for warning signs: yellow crusty patches (cradle cap), red scaly areas, or your baby constantly scratching their head. These may need a gentle antifungal shampoo — ask your paediatrician before using any medicated product on young children.
A light, breathable scalp means a happier, cooler baby this summer. Simple daily care goes a long way!
