Is Your Toddler's Speech on Track?
Simple ways to support your child's language milestones at every age
Many parents worry whether their child is speaking enough or using the right words. Remember, every child develops at their own pace, but there are gentle ways to support their journey.
By 12 months, most babies say 1-2 words like 'mama' or 'dada'. By 18 months, expect 10-20 words. Two-year-olds typically combine two words ('want pani', 'dada gone'), and by age 3, they speak in short sentences. If your child understands you but isn't speaking much, that's often normal—comprehension comes before expression.
To boost language skills: Talk constantly during daily activities ('Let's wear your blue kurta', 'Mumma is cutting the alu'). Read picture books in your mother tongue—Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, or any language you're comfortable with. Bilingual homes are wonderful for brain development! Sing rhymes, name body parts during bath time, and most importantly, give them time to respond without rushing or completing their sentences.
Avoid excessive screen time—real conversations matter more than educational videos. If by 2 years your child has fewer than 25 words, isn't making eye contact, or by 3 years isn't using sentences, consult your pediatrician. Early intervention makes a huge difference.
Your voice is your child's most powerful learning tool. Keep talking, keep encouraging, and celebrate every new word!
