Is Your Toddler's Speech on Track?

Simple milestones and activities to boost your little one's language skills

Every child develops at their own pace, but knowing speech milestones helps you support your little one better. By 12 months, most babies say 1-2 words like 'mama' or 'papa'. By 18 months, they typically use 10-20 words. Two-year-olds often combine 2-3 words, and by age 3, they speak in simple sentences.

Don't worry if your child mixes Hindi, English, or your regional language—this is completely normal in Indian households! Bilingualism doesn't delay speech; it enriches it. However, do consult your pediatrician if your 2-year-old uses fewer than 50 words or doesn't respond to their name.

To boost language skills, talk constantly during daily activities. Narrate while cooking: 'Dekho, Mumma daal pakaa rahi hai.' Read picture books together, sing rhymes like 'Machli jal ki rani hai', and limit screen time. Respond to your child's babbles with enthusiasm—it encourages them to keep trying!

Avoid baby talk or correcting harshly. Instead, model correct pronunciation naturally. If they say 'wawa', respond with 'Yes, that's water!' Create a language-rich environment with conversations, songs, and stories. Remember, every word you speak plants a seed in your child's developing mind.
