Is Your Toddler's Speech on Track?
Understanding speech milestones and when to seek help for your little one
Many Indian parents worry about their child's speech development, especially when comparing with cousins or neighbors' children. Remember, every child develops at their own pace, but knowing key milestones helps you identify if support is needed.
By 12 months, most babies say 'mama' or 'dada' and understand simple words like 'no'. By 18 months, expect 10-20 words including names of family members. Two-year-olds typically combine two words ('Papa aao', 'doodh chahiye') and follow simple instructions. By age 3, children speak in sentences and strangers can understand most of their speech.
To boost speech development: Talk to your child constantly in your mother tongue—Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil, or any language you're comfortable with. Bilingualism doesn't delay speech! Narrate daily activities ('Abhi hum haath dhoyenge'), read colorful books together, sing rhymes like 'Machli jal ki rani hai', and respond enthusiastically to their babbling. Limit screen time as it reduces valuable conversation time.
Seek a pediatrician's advice if your 2-year-old uses fewer than 25 words, doesn't make eye contact, or lost previously acquired speech skills. Early intervention makes a significant difference. Trust your instincts—you know your child best. Speech therapy isn't something to fear; it's a tool to help your child communicate confidently and joyfully with the world around them.
