Is Your Toddler's Speech on Track?
Simple milestones and tips to support your child's language development
Many Indian parents worry about their toddler's speech, especially in multilingual homes. Here's what to expect and how to help.
**Age-wise milestones:** By 12 months, babies should babble and say 1-2 words like 'mama' or 'dada'. By 18 months, expect 10-20 words. Two-year-olds typically use 2-word phrases like 'want pani' or 'papa gaya'. By 3 years, they should speak in short sentences that strangers can understand.
**Supporting speech in bilingual homes:** Don't worry about mixing languages - it's completely normal! Speak naturally in your mother tongue. Whether it's Gujarati, Tamil, or Hindi, children easily learn multiple languages. Each parent can speak their preferred language consistently.
**Daily practices that help:** Talk about everything you're doing - 'Let's wear your kapde', 'Time for doodh'. Read picture books together, pointing and naming. Sing rhymes in any language. Respond to your child's attempts to communicate, even if words aren't clear yet. Avoid excessive screen time - real conversations matter most.
**When to consult:** If by 18 months your child has fewer than 10 words, doesn't respond to their name, or by 2 years isn't combining words, discuss with your pediatrician. Early intervention makes a significant difference.
