Is Your Toddler's Speech on Track?
Simple milestones and tips to support your child's language development
Many Indian parents worry whether their child is talking enough or clearly enough. Speech development varies greatly, but knowing key milestones helps you support your little one better.
By 12 months, most babies say 1-2 words like 'mumma' or 'papa'. By 18 months, expect 10-20 words. Two-year-olds usually combine 2 words ('want water'), and by 3 years, they speak in short sentences. Remember, bilingual children (speaking Hindi, English, or regional languages at home) may mix languages initially—this is completely normal and healthy!
To boost speech development: Talk constantly during daily activities ('Let's wear your blue kurta'), read picture books together, sing rhymes like 'Chanda mama door ke', and respond enthusiastically to your child's attempts to communicate. Limit screen time, as real conversations matter most.
Red flags needing pediatrician consultation: No words by 16 months, no two-word phrases by 2 years, or if your child stops using words they once knew. Early intervention makes a huge difference. Also, if family members don't understand your 3-year-old's speech most of the time, get a speech assessment.
Every child's timeline is unique. Your patience, conversation, and engagement are the best gifts for your child's blossoming communication skills!
