Is Your Toddler's Speech on Track?

Simple milestones and tips to nurture your little one's language skills

Many parents worry whether their toddler is talking enough. Speech development varies greatly, but knowing basic milestones helps you support your child better.

By 12 months, most babies say 1-2 words like 'mama' or 'dada'. By 18 months, expect 10-20 words. At 2 years, they should combine two words ('papa gaya', 'doodh do'), and by 3 years, speak in simple sentences. Remember, bilingual homes may see slightly delayed speech initially, but children catch up beautifully.

To encourage speech: Talk constantly during daily activities ('ab hum haath dhoyenge'), read picture books in any language, sing rhymes and lullories, respond enthusiastically to all sounds they make, and limit screen time which reduces real conversation. Avoid comparing with other children or pressuring them to perform.

Red flags needing pediatrician consultation: no babbling by 12 months, no words by 18 months, no two-word phrases by 2.5 years, or loss of previously acquired skills. During monsoon when you're indoors more, it's actually perfect for extra talking, storytelling, and bonding time.

Every child's timeline is unique. Your warm responses and conversations are the best gift for their developing brain!
