Is Your Toddler Talking Enough? A Quick Guide
Simple milestones and tips to support your little one's language journey
Many parents worry about their toddler's speech development, especially when comparing with other children. Remember, every child develops at their own pace, but knowing key milestones helps you stay informed.
By 12 months, most babies say 1-2 words like 'mumma' or 'dada'. By 18 months, expect 10-20 words and simple gestures. At 2 years, toddlers typically combine 2 words ('want water', 'Papa gaye'). By 3 years, they speak in 3-4 word sentences that strangers can understand.
To boost language skills: Talk constantly during daily activities—'Chalo, haath dhote hain', 'Yeh laal rang hai'. Read simple Hindi, English, or regional language books together daily. Sing rhymes and children's songs. Respond to their babbling as if it's real conversation. Limit screen time, as face-to-face interaction is crucial. Name objects in both your mother tongue and English if you're bilingual—this won't confuse them!
Avoid baby talk after 18 months; use proper words. Don't anticipate every need—encourage them to ask. If by 2 years your child isn't saying any words, or by 3 years isn't making simple sentences, consult your pediatrician. Early intervention makes a significant difference. Your voice is your child's first teacher—use it generously with love and patience!
