Is Your Toddler Ready for Potty Training?
Spotting the signs and starting potty training the Indian way
Potty training is a major milestone, but starting too early can create stress for both parent and child. Most Indian toddlers are ready between 18-30 months, though every child is different.
Watch for these readiness signs: your child stays dry for 2 hours, shows interest when you use the bathroom, can follow simple instructions like "come here," expresses discomfort with dirty diapers, or asks to use the potty. Physical signs include walking steadily and being able to pull pants up and down.
In Indian homes, many families use the "angrez" (Western toilet) or Indian-style toilets. Start with whichever your child will use most. Small potty seats that sit on the floor work well and feel secure for toddlers. Keep it in the bathroom where they see family members go, creating familiarity. Morning after waking and after meals are natural times to encourage sitting.
Do's: Celebrate small successes, dress your child in easy-to-remove clothes like loose pajamas, and stay patient. Don't: Never scold for accidents, compare with other children, or force sitting on the potty. Some children train in weeks, others take months.
Remember, accidents are part of learning. Your calm, encouraging approach will help your little one master this skill with confidence and pride.
