Is Your Child Ready for Preschool?
Key signs and skills to help you decide if it's the right time
Many parents wonder when their child is truly ready for preschool. While age matters, developmental readiness is more important than just turning three.
Look for these signs: Can your child communicate basic needs like 'potty' or 'water'? Do they show interest in playing with other children? Can they follow simple two-step instructions like 'pick up the toy and put it in the box'? Are they comfortable being away from you for short periods? These skills matter more than knowing ABC or 123.
Physical readiness includes basic self-care: eating independently with a spoon, drinking from a cup, and attempting to wear shoes or wash hands. Emotional readiness means they can handle minor frustrations without constant meltdowns.
Don't rush if your child isn't ready. Some children thrive at 2.5 years, others need until 3.5. Consider starting with shorter hours—many Indian preschools offer half-day programs. Visit the school together beforehand, talk positively about it, and establish a goodbye routine.
Remember, preschool isn't mandatory. If your child needs more time, that's perfectly fine. Every child develops at their own pace, and a few extra months at home can make the transition much smoother for everyone.
