Is Your Child Ready for Preschool?
Essential developmental milestones to check before preschool admission season
October is preschool admission season across India! If your little one is turning 2-3 years old, you might be wondering if they're ready for this big step.
Readiness isn't just about age—it's about developmental milestones. Can your child communicate basic needs like "paani" or "toilet"? Can they separate from you for 2-3 hours without extreme distress? Are they comfortable being around other children? These are more important than knowing ABC or 123.
Physical readiness matters too. Check if your child can eat independently, drink from a glass, and attempt using the toilet (complete potty training isn't necessary). Can they wash hands with minimal help? These self-help skills make the transition smoother.
Don't rush if your child isn't ready—every child develops at their own pace. Starting preschool too early can lead to unnecessary stress. Instead, arrange playdates, visit parks, and practice small separations at home. Many excellent preschools in India now offer trial days—use these to gauge your child's comfort level.
Remember, preschool should be about play, socialization, and building confidence—not academics. Choose a nurturing environment that respects your child's developmental stage. Trust your parental instinct; you know your child best!
