Help Your Child Sleep Cool This Summer
Simple tips to keep your little one comfortable and well-rested in the heat.
Summer nights in India can be brutally hot, and for babies and toddlers, poor sleep means irritability, fussiness, and even heat-related stress. Here is how you can make bedtime more comfortable for your little one.
Dress your child in soft, loose, single-layer cotton clothes for sleep. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat. A simple cotton jhabla or half-sleeve vest works beautifully for babies under one year. For toddlers, light cotton pyjamas are ideal.
Keep the room well-ventilated. If using a fan, make sure it is not blowing directly on the baby. If you use an AC, keep the temperature between 26°C and 28°C — anything colder can cause nasal congestion or a chill. Place a bowl of water near the fan to add mild humidity if the air feels too dry.
Bathe your child with lukewarm water about 30–45 minutes before bedtime. This naturally lowers body temperature and signals the brain that sleep time is near. Avoid ice-cold water baths, as the sudden temperature change can be uncomfortable.
Use a thin cotton mattress sheet and avoid thick quilts or blankets. A light muslin swaddle is enough for very young babies. Check your child's neck or back — if they feel sweaty or clammy, they are too warm.
Keep bedtime consistent. Even in summer holidays, a routine of dinner, bath, quiet play, and sleep helps children feel secure and fall asleep faster. A well-rested child handles the summer heat much better during the day.
