Help Your Child Sleep Better This Summer

Hot nights disturb little ones — here's how to help them rest well.

Summer nights in India can be brutally hot and humid, making it really hard for babies and toddlers to fall and stay asleep. Unlike adults, young children cannot regulate their body temperature well, so they wake up cranky, sweaty, and overtired. A good night's sleep is essential for their growth, immunity, and mood — so let's make bedtime easier!

Start by cooling the room before bedtime. Run the fan or AC for at least 30 minutes before you put your child to sleep. The ideal room temperature for young children is between 24–26°C. Avoid placing the AC vent blowing directly on the baby. If you use a fan, make sure it is not pointed directly at your child.

Dress your child in loose, light cotton clothing — a simple jhabla or cotton onesie works best. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat. Use a thin cotton bedsheet instead of heavy blankets. A light muslin swaddle works well for babies under 3 months.

Establish a calming bedtime routine — a lukewarm bath, a gentle massage with coconut oil, a short lullaby or story, and then lights out. Consistency helps the brain signal that sleep time has arrived. Avoid screen time at least one hour before bed.

Keep your child well-hydrated during the day. A thirsty, dehydrated toddler will sleep poorly. Offer water, coconut water, or diluted fruit juice through the day. Breastfed babies need more frequent feeds in summer. A well-rested child is a happier, healthier child — and so are you, dear parent!
