Handling Separation Anxiety in Toddlers
Practical ways to help your little one cope when you're away
Many Indian parents face this challenge: your toddler clings to you and cries when you leave for work or even step into another room. This is separation anxiety, and it's completely normal between 8 months to 3 years.
With monsoon season keeping children indoors more, they may become extra attached to you. Don't worry—this phase shows healthy bonding! The key is helping them feel secure even when apart.
Start with short separations. Leave your child with a trusted family member (dadi, nani, or masi) for just 10-15 minutes while you're nearby. Gradually increase the time. Always say goodbye—sneaking away might increase anxiety. Create a simple goodbye ritual: a special hug, wave, or saying "Mumma/Papa will come back soon!"
Leave a comfort object like your dupatta or their favorite toy. Play peek-a-boo games regularly to teach that people come back. If you're returning to office post-maternity leave, start this practice 2-3 weeks before.
Avoid long, emotional goodbyes. Keep it cheerful and confident—children pick up on our anxiety. When you return, shower them with attention. Remember, consistency is key. With patience and these strategies, your little one will learn that separations are temporary and safe.
