Hand Foot Mouth Disease: April Alert for Parents
Rising HFMD cases in summer - know the signs and protect your little ones
Dear parents, with summer temperatures rising across India, we're seeing increased cases of Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD) in children under 5. This viral infection spreads quickly in warm weather and crowded spaces like daycare centers.
Watch for these key symptoms: fever, sore throat, and small red spots or blisters on palms, soles, and inside the mouth. Your child may refuse to eat due to mouth pain and seem unusually cranky. The rash typically appears 1-2 days after fever starts.
Prevention is crucial: wash hands frequently with soap for 20 seconds, especially before meals and after using the toilet. Disinfect toys and surfaces daily. Avoid sharing utensils, bottles, or cups between children. Keep your child home if they show symptoms to prevent spreading.
Most cases are mild and resolve in 7-10 days. Offer soft, cool foods like khichdi, curd, or coconut water. Avoid spicy or acidic foods that irritate mouth sores. Consult your pediatrician if fever exceeds 101°F, your child shows signs of dehydration, or refuses to drink fluids. Early recognition helps prevent complications and protects other children.
