Gentle Ways to Ease Your Toddler's Constipation
Natural, pediatrician-approved tips to help your little one find relief
Constipation is one of the most common concerns I hear from parents. If your toddler is straining, passing hard stools, or going less than 3 times a week, here's how you can help.
**Increase Fiber Gradually:** Include papaya, pear, prunes (dried plums), and oranges in their diet. Traditional options like ragi porridge, moong dal khichdi, and sabzi with palak or methi work wonderfully. Avoid overloading with bananas or white rice during this time.
**Hydration is Key:** Ensure your child drinks adequate water throughout the day—not just during meals. For toddlers over 2 years, fresh coconut water or diluted buttermilk (chaas) can help. Avoid excessive milk consumption as it can worsen constipation.
**Encourage Movement:** Physical activity helps bowel movement. Let your toddler run, jump, and play freely. Even simple exercises like bicycle legs while lying down can provide relief.
**Create a Toilet Routine:** Encourage sitting on the potty after meals, especially breakfast, when the body's natural reflexes are strongest. Never rush or pressurize them.
**When to See a Doctor:** If there's blood in stools, severe pain, or constipation persists beyond a week despite dietary changes, consult your pediatrician. Sometimes, a gentle stool softener may be needed, but never give any medication without medical advice.
