Gentle Relief for Your Toddler's Constipation
Simple, natural ways to ease constipation in babies and toddlers aged 0-5
Constipation is one of the most common concerns parents face, especially during monsoon when children tend to drink less water and be less active. If your little one is straining, passing hard stools, or going less than three times a week, it's time for some gentle intervention.
Start with hydration - offer plenty of water throughout the day, especially between meals. For babies under 6 months on exclusive breastfeeding, continue frequent nursing. For older babies and toddlers, include fiber-rich Indian foods like mashed papaya, stewed prunes (aloo bukhara), ripe banana, dal water, ragi porridge, and oats khichdi. A small bowl of moong dal soup works wonders.
Physical activity is crucial. Encourage crawling, walking, or simple leg-cycling exercises for younger babies. Even 10-15 minutes of active play can stimulate bowel movement. A gentle tummy massage in clockwise circles after bath time also helps.
Avoid giving your child too much rice, banana (unripe), white bread, or processed foods during this time. If constipation persists for more than a week despite these changes, or if you notice blood in stools or severe pain, consult your pediatrician immediately. Remember, every child's digestive system is different - what works may take a few days, so be patient and consistent.
