First Teeth, Bright Smiles: Dental Care Guide
Essential dental hygiene tips for your little one's precious teeth
Many parents don't realize that baby teeth need as much care as permanent ones! Even before the first tooth appears, gently wipe your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth after feeds. This prevents bacterial buildup and prepares them for brushing later.
Once teeth emerge (usually around 6 months), start brushing twice daily with a rice-grain sized smear of fluoride toothpaste. By age 3, increase to a pea-sized amount. Choose a soft-bristled, small-headed brush designed for toddlers. Make it fun—sing songs, let them watch you brush, or use a colorful brush.
Avoid common mistakes: Don't let your child sleep with a bottle of milk or juice—this causes severe tooth decay. Limit sugary treats, including mithai and biscuits. After sticky foods like chikki or aam papad, rinse their mouth with water. Never dip pacifiers in honey or sugar.
Schedule your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. Early cavities are increasingly common in Indian toddlers, often due to prolonged bottle-feeding and frequent snacking. Remember, healthy baby teeth guide permanent teeth into proper position and help with speech development. Start good habits early—your child's smile depends on it!
