Festival Sweets & Little Tummies: A Safety Guide

Navigate Navratri & Diwali treats safely with your little one this festive season

With Navratri behind us and Diwali approaching, our homes are filled with delicious sweets and festive foods. While we want our little ones to enjoy the celebrations, their developing digestive systems need special care.

**Age-Appropriate Guidelines:** Babies under 1 year should avoid honey (botulism risk), nuts, and added sugars entirely. For toddlers aged 1-3, limit sweets to tiny portions—one small piece of barfi or a teaspoon of kheer is plenty. Children aged 3-5 can have slightly more, but still keep it minimal to prevent tummy upsets.

**Common Festival Food Concerns:** Deep-fried items like chakli and sev can be hard to digest for young children. Ghee-laden sweets might cause loose motions. Silver varq (foil) on sweets is safe in small amounts, but ensure it's food-grade. Watch out for choking hazards like whole nuts in chikki or dry fruits in laddoos—always break them into tiny pieces or avoid entirely for under-3s.

**Smart Tips:** Offer sweets after a meal, not on an empty stomach. Keep your child well-hydrated. If relatives insist on feeding, politely explain your child's age limitations. Have healthy alternatives ready—dates, mashed banana, or homemade fruit puree can satisfy their sweet tooth safely.

Festivals are about joy, not tummy troubles. A little caution ensures your little one celebrates comfortably!
