Easing Your Toddler's Separation Anxiety

Simple strategies to help your little one feel secure when you step away

Does your toddler cry every time you leave the room or drop them at daycare? This is completely normal! Separation anxiety typically peaks between 10-18 months and can resurface around 2-3 years, especially after festivals when families spend more time together.

**Dos:** Create a goodbye ritual - a special hug, kiss, or phrase like "Mumma will be back after your snack time." Keep goodbyes short and cheerful. Never sneak away, as this breaks trust. Play peek-a-boo games at home to teach that you always come back. Leave a small item of yours (like a dupatta or handkerchief) for comfort. Maintain consistent routines - predictability helps children feel secure.

**Don'ts:** Don't prolong goodbyes or show your own anxiety. Avoid dismissing their feelings with "You're a big boy now, don't cry." Never use leaving as a threat ("I'll go away if you don't listen").

**Indian context tip:** If your child stays with grandparents or house help, ensure they have a comfort object and maintain similar meal/nap routines. During October's festive season, gradually transition back to regular schedules after Dussehra celebrations.

Remember, separation anxiety shows healthy attachment. With patience and consistency, most children outgrow this phase by age 3. You're doing great, and this too shall pass!
