Drying Baby Clothes Safely This Monsoon

Damp clothes can cause infections—here's how to keep baby's wardrobe clean

The monsoon brings a hidden challenge many parents overlook—keeping baby clothes truly clean and dry. Damp, improperly dried clothes can harbor bacteria, fungi, and mold that cause skin rashes, allergies, and infections in young children whose skin is delicate and sensitive.

Never dress your child in clothes that feel even slightly damp. The moisture creates a perfect environment for fungal growth, especially in areas like the diaper region, neck folds, and underarms. If natural sunlight isn't available, use a fan, iron the clothes dry, or invest in a room heater for the drying area. Always smell clothes before storing—any musty odor means they need re-washing.

Wash baby clothes separately using a mild, chemical-free detergent. Add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle—it's a natural disinfectant and prevents that typical monsoon smell. After washing, wring clothes thoroughly and hang them in the most ventilated part of your home. Indoor drying racks near windows work well.

Store only completely dry clothes in the cupboard. Add silica gel packets or neem leaves to prevent moisture buildup. During monsoon, reduce the number of clothes in rotation—it's better to have fewer, completely dry outfits than many damp ones. Check stored clothes weekly for any signs of moisture or smell, especially if your child develops unexplained rashes.
