Choosing Safe Footwear for Little Feet

Monsoon footwear tips to prevent slips, infections & support healthy feet

During monsoons, your toddler's footwear choices become crucial for their safety and health. Wet floors, muddy puddles, and constant moisture can lead to slips, fungal infections, and discomfort.

For outdoor play, choose closed-toe sandals or gumboots with good grip. Look for non-slip soles with deep treads. Avoid fancy jellies or crocs with smooth bottoms—they're slip hazards on wet surfaces. Canvas shoes that stay damp for hours are breeding grounds for fungal infections. Instead, opt for quick-drying materials or waterproof footwear.

Indoors, let little ones go barefoot on dry floors—it's excellent for developing balance and foot strength. If your floors are cold or slippery, use cotton socks with rubber grips. After coming in from rain, immediately dry those tiny feet thoroughly, especially between toes, to prevent athlete's foot and infections.

Important: Check that shoes fit properly with a thumb's width of space at the toe. Ill-fitting monsoon footwear can cause blisters when wet. Keep at least two pairs rotating so one can dry completely. Sun-dry shoes whenever possible, and stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture. A little talcum powder or antifungal powder in shoes can help keep feet dry and infection-free during these humid months.
