Breathing Easy: Monsoon Chest Care for Babies
Protect your little one from monsoon coughs, colds, and chest congestion
The monsoon brings a significant rise in respiratory infections among young children. The combination of humidity, temperature fluctuations, and increased indoor time creates perfect conditions for viruses and allergens to thrive.
Keep your home well-ventilated even during rains—open windows for 15-20 minutes when there's no heavy downpour. Dampness promotes mold growth, which triggers breathing problems. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe walls and check corners regularly. Avoid using room fresheners or agarbatti around babies as these can irritate tiny airways.
Steam inhalation works wonders for congestion. Sit with your baby in a steamy bathroom (not directly under hot water) for 5-7 minutes, or use a steamer at a safe distance. For infants, a few drops of saline in each nostril helps clear blocked noses. Keep your child hydrated with frequent breastfeeding, warm dal ka pani, or jeera water for older babies.
Watch for warning signs: rapid breathing, chest pulling inward while breathing, refusing feeds, or persistent fever. These need immediate medical attention. Ensure your child's vaccinations, especially flu and pneumococcal vaccines, are up to date. Dress your baby in breathable cotton layers—neither too warm nor too light—as sudden temperature changes can trigger respiratory issues.
