Boost Your Toddler's Iron This Monsoon
Monsoon illnesses drain iron stores - rebuild immunity with these tasty foods
Monsoon brings frequent infections that can deplete your little one's iron stores, leading to fatigue, pale skin, and lowered immunity. For children aged 1-5 years, iron is crucial for brain development and energy.
Start with dal-based meals - moong dal khichdi with ghee and a squeeze of lemon (vitamin C helps iron absorption). Ragi porridge sweetened with jaggery makes an excellent breakfast. For older toddlers, try palak puris or methi parathas with curd. Non-vegetarian families can offer well-cooked chicken liver curry or fish like rohu and pomfret.
Don't give iron-rich foods with milk or tea, as calcium blocks absorption. Space them at least 2 hours apart. Pair iron foods with amla, tomatoes, or orange slices instead. Avoid giving too much processed food during monsoon as it crowds out nutritious meals.
Watch for signs of iron deficiency: unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, or frequent infections. If your child was recently unwell with fever or diarrhea, focus extra on iron-rich meals for 2-3 weeks. A simple blood test can check hemoglobin levels if you're concerned. Remember, building strong immunity starts on the plate!
