Beating Diaper Rash in Humid Monsoon Weather

Extra humidity means more diaper rash - here's how to keep baby's bottom happy

The monsoon's high humidity creates the perfect storm for diaper rash. Your baby's delicate skin stays damp longer, creating a breeding ground for irritation and fungal infections.

Start with frequent diaper changes - every 2-3 hours minimum, even if the diaper isn't fully soaked. After each change, gently pat the area completely dry with a soft cotton cloth. During monsoons, air-drying takes longer, so be patient. Many Indian parents use a hand fan (pankha) to speed up drying - this works wonderfully!

Apply a thin layer of barrier cream with zinc oxide after every change. Coconut oil works well for mild cases, but avoid it if there's any sign of fungal infection (bright red rash with satellite spots). In that case, consult your pediatrician for antifungal cream.

Give diaper-free time twice daily - spread a waterproof mat with soft cloth on top and let your baby play without a diaper for 20-30 minutes. This breathing time is crucial during humid months. Choose breathable cloth diapers when possible, or premium quality disposables that wick moisture away effectively.

Avoid using talcum powder in the diaper area as it can cake up with moisture and worsen irritation. If rash persists beyond 2-3 days despite care, see your doctor to rule out fungal or bacterial infection.
