Beat the Prickly Heat This Summer!
Keep your little one's skin rash-free in the scorching Indian heat.
May in India means soaring temperatures, and for babies and toddlers, this often leads to prickly heat rash (ghamori). Their sweat glands are still developing, making them much more prone to this uncomfortable skin condition than adults. You may notice tiny red bumps or blisters on the neck, back, chest, or skin folds — this is the body's reaction to blocked sweat ducts.
The best remedy is keeping your child cool and dry. Dress them in loose, soft, 100% cotton clothing — avoid synthetic fabrics completely during summer. Change sweat-soaked clothes promptly, especially after outdoor time or naps. Give a gentle lukewarm (not cold) bath once or twice a day to soothe the skin and rinse away sweat.
For Indian home remedies, applying a thin layer of chilled multani mitti (Fuller's earth) paste or pure rose water on the affected area can provide relief. Avoid heavy oil massages on rash-prone areas during peak summer. You can continue coconut oil massage on limbs, but keep the back and neck area light and breathable.
Do NOT use talcum powder — it can clog pores further and worsen the rash. Avoid tight diapers or clothing. Keep your home well-ventilated with fans or AC set between 24–26°C. If the rash becomes very red, starts weeping, or your baby seems in pain, consult your pediatrician — it may need a mild medicated cream.
Remember, prickly heat is very common and completely manageable. With a little care and the right clothing choices, your baby can stay comfortable and happy even on the hottest summer days! 💛
