Beat the Heat: Summer Safety for Little Ones

Essential tips to keep your baby cool and comfortable during India's hot summer

As summer temperatures soar across India, protecting our little ones from heat becomes our top priority. Babies and toddlers are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses because their bodies don't regulate temperature as effectively as adults.

Start with clothing - dress your child in loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothes. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat. A cotton cap is essential when stepping outdoors, even for short periods. For babies under 6 months, breastfeed more frequently as breast milk provides perfect hydration. Older children should sip water throughout the day - offer small amounts every 15-20 minutes.

Keep your home cool using fans, coolers, or AC if available. During peak heat hours (11 AM to 4 PM), avoid outdoor activities completely. If you must go out, carry an umbrella and wet wipes for quick cooling. Watch for signs of overheating: flushed skin, excessive fussiness, reduced urination, or lethargy.

Traditional remedies like coconut water (for children above 1 year) and cucumber can provide natural cooling. Remember, prevention is always better than treatment when it comes to heat-related issues.
