Beat the Heat: Summer Hydration for Little Ones
Essential tips to keep your baby cool and hydrated this April heat
As April's scorching heat settles in across India, keeping our little ones hydrated becomes our top priority. Babies and toddlers are more vulnerable to dehydration as their small bodies lose water faster than adults.
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula provides all the hydration they need - offer feeds more frequently during hot days. For older babies, introduce small sips of cooled boiled water between meals. Coconut water (after 8 months) is excellent for natural electrolyte replacement.
Watch for dehydration signs: fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, lethargy, or sunken soft spots in infants. During peak heat hours (11 AM - 4 PM), keep children indoors in well-ventilated rooms.
Helpful summer drinks for toddlers include diluted fresh fruit juices, buttermilk (chaas), and water infused with mint or cucumber. Avoid sugary drinks and cold beverages straight from the fridge. Dress children in loose, light-colored cotton clothes and use a damp cloth to wipe them frequently.
Remember, prevention is better than cure. Small, frequent fluid intake works better than large quantities at once.
