Beat Summer Viral Fever in Kids
Essential tips to protect your little ones from common summer viruses
As temperatures soar across India, viral infections become more common in children. The hot, humid weather creates perfect conditions for viruses to spread, especially in crowded places like schools and playgrounds.
Watch for these warning signs: sudden high fever (above 100°F), loss of appetite, excessive crying or fussiness in babies, and body aches in toddlers. Unlike bacterial infections, viral fevers often come with runny nose, mild cough, or stomach upset.
Keep your child hydrated with frequent small sips of water, coconut water, or diluted fresh fruit juices. For babies under 6 months, increase breastfeeding frequency. Offer light, easily digestible foods like khichdi, banana, or curd rice. Avoid forcing food if appetite is poor.
Create a cool, comfortable environment at home. Use fans instead of AC when possible, as sudden temperature changes can worsen symptoms. Give paracetamol only if fever crosses 100°F and consult your pediatrician before any medication.
Most viral fevers resolve in 3-5 days with rest and care. However, seek immediate medical attention if your child shows signs of dehydration, difficulty breathing, or fever persists beyond 5 days.
