Beat Summer Heat: Cool Foods for Your Little One
Keep your child hydrated and cool with these summer-friendly Indian foods
As summer temperatures soar across India, keeping our little ones cool and well-nourished becomes crucial. The scorching April heat can quickly dehydrate children and affect their appetite.
Start with cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, and muskmelon cut into age-appropriate pieces. For babies over 6 months, offer diluted buttermilk (chaas) or coconut water in small sips. Yogurt-based dishes like raita with grated cucumber or mint work wonderfully for toddlers.
Traditional Indian cooling foods are perfect now - serve kheer made with rice and cold milk, or offer sattu mixed with water for children above 1 year. Fresh seasonal fruits like mangoes should be given in moderation and preferably in the morning. Avoid heavy, fried foods and opt for light khichdi with ghee.
Remember to offer water frequently, even if your child doesn't ask. Tender coconut water is excellent for electrolyte balance. Keep meal portions smaller but increase frequency. Always serve food at room temperature, never directly from the refrigerator.
Watch for signs of dehydration like reduced urination, lethargy, or dry lips, and consult your pediatrician immediately if concerned.
