Beat Prickly Heat in Babies!
Simple home tips to soothe and prevent heat rash this summer.
In peak Indian summer, prickly heat (ghamori) is one of the most common discomforts for babies and toddlers. Their sweat glands are still developing, which means sweat gets trapped under the skin — causing those tiny red, itchy bumps. As a parent, you can do a lot to help!
First, keep your child's skin cool and dry. Dress them in loose, soft cotton clothes — avoid synthetic fabrics completely. Change sweat-soaked clothes promptly, especially after naps or outdoor play. Bathe your child twice a day with lukewarm (not cold) water to gently cleanse sweat and bacteria.
For quick relief, apply a thin dusting of medicated prickly heat powder (like Nycil or Dermicool) on affected areas after bathing and drying well. Avoid heavy creams or oil on the rash — they block pores further. A cool, damp cloth gently patted on the rash can instantly soothe itching.
At home, use a fan or air cooler to maintain a comfortable room temperature. If possible, let your baby's skin breathe with minimal clothing during indoor time. Avoid taking babies out between 11 AM and 4 PM when heat is at its peak.
See a doctor if the rash spreads, the skin looks infected (yellow pus, swelling), or your child has fever. Prickly heat is manageable — with a little care, your little one's skin will stay happy all summer long! 💛
