Beat Monsoon Diaper Rash: Keep Baby Comfortable
High humidity during monsoons increases diaper rash risk—here's how to protect baby
The monsoon's high humidity makes it harder for baby's skin to stay dry, leading to more frequent and severe diaper rashes. The warm, moist environment inside a diaper becomes a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria during this season.
Change diapers more frequently than usual—ideally every 2-3 hours, even if the diaper doesn't seem very wet. The extra moisture in the air means skin takes longer to dry naturally. After each change, gently pat the diaper area completely dry with a soft cotton cloth before putting on a fresh diaper.
Give your baby diaper-free time twice daily, especially after bath time. Let them lie on a waterproof mat with a soft towel for 15-20 minutes. This air exposure is crucial during monsoons when skin rarely gets to breathe. Apply a zinc oxide-based barrier cream (like those available at any Indian pharmacy) at every change to create a protective layer.
Avoid using baby wipes excessively—they can leave moisture behind. Instead, wash with plain lukewarm water and pat dry thoroughly. If rash develops despite precautions, appears very red, has pimples, or doesn't improve in 2-3 days, consult your pediatrician as it may need antifungal treatment.
Remember, prevention is easier than treatment, especially during the challenging monsoon months!
