Baby's First Haircut: Health & Safety Guide
Planning mundan? Here's what pediatricians want you to know for a safe ceremony
Mundan sanskar is a cherished tradition across India, usually performed between 6 months to 3 years. While it's a beautiful cultural celebration, it's important to prioritize your baby's health and safety during this ceremony.
**Dos for a Safe Mundan:** Choose a professional, experienced barber who uses clean, sterilized equipment. Insist on a fresh, sharp blade or scissors - never allow reuse. Keep the ceremony short if your baby is restless. Apply coconut oil or gentle antiseptic cream after shaving to protect the sensitive scalp. Protect your baby's freshly shaved head from direct sun and mosquitoes for at least a week. If visiting a temple or crowded place, use a soft cotton cap.
**Don'ts to Remember:** Avoid mundan if your baby has scalp infections, eczema, or cradle cap - treat these first. Don't force the ceremony if your child is unwell or has fever. Never use old razors or unsterilized tools, as babies' scalps are very delicate and prone to infections. Don't apply harsh products, turmeric paste, or unknown herbal mixtures that may cause allergic reactions.
**Post-Mundan Care:** Watch for any redness, bumps, or cuts. Minor nicks should heal in 2-3 days. If you notice swelling, pus, or your baby develops fever, consult your pediatrician immediately. Remember, while mundan is traditional, there's no medical requirement for it - the timing should suit your baby's health and your family's comfort.
